We offer exciting hands-on, experiential programs for all ages at the outdoor Universe Story Journey site. These unique, multi-disciplinary, multiple intelligences programs offer an opportunity to learn in a story-telling way about the emerging story of our Universe and to awaken in ourselves a sense of how do we humans fit in with this Story.
The Universe Story Journey, a museum-quality, permanent outdoor installation, is a spiral forest Walk with special, large timescale-stations emphasizing key moments in the Story of our emerging Universe. Inspired by the work of Thomas Berry, the Universe Story Journey is located on the 300-acre campus of a private, international high school in Asheville, North Carolina. Designed as an outdoor Time Walk, The Universe Story Journey is a 60-foot wide forest path with gorgeous NASA photos and other rich images along the path… galaxies being born, the Sun, Planet Earth, and DNA… reveal different aspects of the Story.
We offer original curricula designed specifically for the site which focus on the subject areas of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geometry, Creation Myths, Nature Writing, etc. These experiential programs are designed to interface with existing national standard curricula.
Topics include:
Ancient and Contemporary Cosmologies & Creation Myths from around the World; Exploring the Biological Kingdoms and their Place in the Universe Story;
Origin of the Chemical Elements of the Periodic Table and their Place in the Universe Story; and the Living Geometries of Nature.
On this path which winds back to the Origin of the Universe, we take time to pause at the beautiful timescale stations with photos and other rich images …”galaxies being born”…”the Sun”…”Planet Earth”…and “DNA”… and get in touch with a sense of Deep Time and the Great Story. Throughout history, peoples around the planet have had their Story of How the World Came to Be and how their tribe or people saw themselves as a part of that larger Story.
Today, we humans continue to explore the vastness and interconnections of the Universe and ourselves. From biology to chemistry to physics and beyond, we discover about the unfolding of our Universe…our galaxies, our chemical elements, our own cells and more.
Our experiential programs offer a way to reflect upon this larger Universe Story and to integrate this understanding into our own lives as individuals and as a global community. Walking the Universe Story Journey offers a unique multi-disciplinary, multiple intelligences opportunity to spark a deeper appreciation of the beauty, vastness and presence of the Universe in which we live…and to ask ourselves the question…How do I /We more fully participate in this Great Story?
Marnie Muller, MLA co-designed and developed this permanent outdoor site on the Asheville School campus, a private, international high school situated on 300 acres. Marnie extensively studied with Thomas Berry (1914 – 2009) author of The Dream of the Earth, The Universe Story, The Great Work, and whose archives are at Cabot Library, Harvard University. She was a participant in the original cosmological invitational symposium hosted by the Center for the Story of the Universe to offer feedback on the narrative of The Universe Story manuscript. She was also a founding member of the group of educators from the US and Canada who convened at Genesis Farm and developed experiential learning models for sharing the Universe Story.
